(6 Jan 1998) Thai/Nat\r
\r
Thai prime minister, Chuan Leekpai, says the worst is yet to come for the nation’s \r
beleaguered currency. \r
\r
Chuan made his comments as the baht hit a record low against the US dollar plunging through the milestone \”fifty\” level for the first time. \r
\r
The government is expected to ask the IMF (International Monetary Fund) for an easing of terms for its continuing bailout package.\r
\r
For tourists and dollarholders, the end of the New Year break brought a seasonal windfall.\r
\r
The baht was trading at 51.05 against the US currency a level unthinkable six months ago. \r
\r
It has now lost half its value since its floatation in July last year.\r
\r
The stock market, too, was down. \r
\r
Dealers blamed a general fall in regional currencies. \r
\r
It was a nightmare start to 1998 for the Chuan administration, following last year’s financial tumble, and, in a frank admission, the premier said he expected worse to come in the next few months.\r
\r
SOUNDBITE: (Thai)\r
\”I have to be frank. I can’t predict what level the baht will be this year, but I have said there will be a period of turbulence, of volatility over the next few months.\”\r
SUPER CAPTION: Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister, Thailand \r
\r
Chuan said the baht would stabilise, but not at a level that reflected fairly the economic picture.\r
\r
SOUNDBITE: (Thai) \r
\”I think the baht will enter a period of stability after the New Year but the range at which the baht will be moving will not reflect the basic economic fundamentals of the country for some time.\”\r
SUPER CAPTION: Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister, Thailand \r
\r
Thailand is currently trying to meet the conditions of an agreement with the IMF for a 17 (b) billion US dollar bailout. \r
\r
The continuing slide is making that ever harder.\r
\r
That’s why Finance Minister Tarrin Nimmanahaeminda is now expected to ask the IMF to ease its terms, later this month.\r
\r
On the positive side, Thailand has seen a surge in export growth and a huge new tourism drive is carrying hopes of an influx of foreign cash.\r
\r
The premier says this, and other moves, such as the closure of 56 insolvent finance companies, will lead to new confidence in the country.\r
\r
SOUNDBITE: (Thai)\r
\” I believe that by the early part of this year we’ll be able to restore stability and to strengthen the financial sector, whether it be banking or other financial institutions.\”\r
SUPER CAPTION: Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister, Thailand \r
\r
All this, and Pol Pot too. \r
\r
As mystery continues over the whereabouts of the former Khmer Rouge leader, Chuan Leekpai said he was in the dark.\r
\r
SOUNDBITE: (Thai)\r
\” There’s no evidence to tell us where Pol Pot is. We just don’t know. All I can tell you is this he is not in Thailand.\”\r
SUPER CAPTION: Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister, Thailand \r
\r
The Thai border close to Pol Pot’s last known refuge is currently heavily guarded, though the frontier’s extremely porous. \r
\r
Pol Pot would have to come through Thailand to leave Cambodia.\r

In the early 1990s, the countries of Southeast Asia along with South Korea seemed to be taking on the world. Banks, investment funds, pension funds, insurance companies… Everyone wanted a piece of the action and the money was pouring in. Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines were the trending countries.

However, on 2 July 1997, everything fell apart.

On that day, one of the greatest financial cataclysms in human history suddenly began to unfold. In just a few months, the entire world would see these once booming and prosperous economies on the verge of collapse. The stock markets collapsed, the currencies depreciated to unimaginable levels and the recession hit the economies of these countries. Suddenly prosperity gave way to unemployment and widespread business failure.

In this new video made in collaboration with Value School, we tell you what happened and why one of the greatest financial crises of all time occurred: the great Asian financial crisis of 1997.
