Whilst you don't necessarily want to change all your money at once you can change your money on 1st floor Bangkok airport with rates as good as the street vendors and I have had no problems with any notes. You may see people queuing at one booth because it has the best rate, but it is so minuscule a difference that it is not worth the queuing time, a couple of cents in a thousand pounds.

This is true,try and change your GBP outside the tourist areas in a bank..this gets really hard they photo copy all the notes front and back then you sign the photocopy along with a copy of your passport after refusing a few for the smallest blemish,then give you the worst rate and then look at you funny as if your at guilty :} i only take pristine notes with me anyway but it tickles me because i am the only farang for miles around LOL .
You can often change your money in Gold shops if you are having a problem, when I was given my pounds back I then gave them back all there notes that where dirty and ask for clean ones they were not happy 🙂
we had problems last year when we presented a few twenty pound notes for exchange at Asoke BTS Super Rich exchange. Granted they were a little old but quite decent for all that. They refused to exchange yet in MBK at the same company they changed without any hassle at all. Go figure.
It's because the money in the exchange places is then repackaged to be sold in bulk to foreign exchanges around the world, they get a lot more for it being nice and crisp than for it looking tatty because customers in the US, China etc want crisp bills/notes when they get their UK money.
How strange is that? So what can you do with money in bad condition?
In the case of changing US dollars to Baht, 50s and 100s are at the best rate they offer at the time, but smaller denomination bills like 20s and below will be at a lower rate, so bring crisp larger bills and leave the small bills at home.
