US dollar extends three-year high versus yen

\”The yen depreciation is having a pretty positive effect because when you look around for good news at the moment, there isn’t any. And if you want to find any, the most likely source is going to be exports picking up. We have had to date showing lately have pretty much stopped going down and that is related to the fact that the yen has fallen about 15 percent over the past year. So when you try to find a way for Japan to get out of this mess, the yen going down and exports improving, is one attractive route.\”\r

STORYLINE:\r

The US dollar climbed against the yen on Friday, extending a threeyear high amid the bleak outlook for Japan’s economy.\r
\r
The dollar purchased 129.34 yen in midafternoon trading up 1.18 yen from late Thursday in Tokyo and also above its late New York level of 128.53 yen overnight.\r
\r
In currency dealings, the dollar moved as high as 129.49 yen during morning trading, the currency’s highest level since October 7, 1998, when it changed hands at 130.70 yen.\r
\r
The yen was under renewed selling pressure after Japan’s central bank lowered its assessment of the economy.\r
\r
In its monthly report, the Bank of Japan on Thursday downgraded its assessment for the seventh straight month.\r
\r
It said the economy was deteriorating amid slumping exports, investment and private consumption.\r
\r
In recent weeks, Japanese officials made remarks supporting a weaker yen.\r
\r
A weaker currency makes Japanese exports cheaper abroad therefore more competitive and boosting earnings of exportoriented Japanese companies.\r
