Just watched the movie folks… Really had to convey here that I genuinely liked the movie.

Actually, I come across watching this movie only by its name. I find its name catchy because it had the word "writer" in its title, so I had to see what is it about. I seriously didn't expect it will be a fantasy movie. (Yes, I didn't read anything but the title and watched the entire movie merely because of it). I have long abandoned the idea to see Chinese fantasy movies, and it has a journey.

I never have liked Chinese fantasy movies such as Journey to the West and the famous one, Monkey King. I really can't stand the cringy performances in these movies even if I try to focus on their storylines. I never have liked these over-the-top cringy acting performances in the name of comedic elements. Even when I watch my childhood favorite "Kung Fu Hustle" now, looking at the unnecessary exaggerated comedic elements just ruins my mood for the movie.

For example, I remember watching "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" I guess a year back. The characters were so weird. Even the main female lead was acting all cranked up and has assigned a role of a mentally disturbed girl it seemed like. One moment, she was a true warrior, and another moment, now she's acting all bossy, sassy, the typical drama queen, excessively rude, and whatever stereotypes you've seen in the movies for 'dramatic women'. In the end, now she has the male lead and everyone's happy, like what?

This movie, in fact, has no such crude humor and cringy acting performances. The movie's theme is quite tense and had only one comedic scene which also didn't have any bad acting or exaggerated performance or representation. You will know when you'll watch. The female (supporting) character is even as strong as the male lead, sensible, courageous, emotional, and sensible.

The good thing about this movie being a fantasy is that, IMO only, unlike other Chinese fantasy movies, this one's storyline makes sense. It was not at all a pain to the eyes and an ache to my brain. Since I have discovered that it is based on a novel, now I know why it was such a good movie. Most novel-adapted movies are amazing! I honestly liked this movie a lot, and hence you see I'm even surfing the internet about it. Worth a watch for everyone. Give it a try. Cheers!
