  1. Pretty much hit the nail on the head. I live in South East Asia and prc films have always been weird to me. Like you said, you get a feel that they're trying too hard.

  2. Okay I have one thing to ask. Chinese 3D animes are always the best, but why their Cgi is so bad 😖. There are lots of good Chinese dramas but they sucks at cgi and sounds 🖐🙀

  3. Real chinese film makers have a story to tell, but they are intimidated by their own government. Chinese cinema cannot make good movies because they all have to pass a one party censor that is increasingly stringent and punitive. Last good chinamovie i watched was summer palace. Look what happened to the director. Lol.

  4. It’s because creativity is stifled by CCP. Film makers don’t have free rein to unleash their imagination and creativity as they see fit. It all has to align by the CCP censorship.

  5. this phenomenon is especially weird to me because Hong Kong and Taiwan make amazing films based in their traditions and realities that do well internationally and look good. Why do filmmakers from mainland china insist on copying the US when they have been shown that they can succeed representing themselves

  6. Can't possibly talk about Chinese cinema without mentioning the CCP trying to force it's principles into films and censorship. It limits creativity and keeps filmmakers worries about endless edits and having their vision tampered with by government officials. Simple things like focusing on an individual like most western storytelling, can often be seen as antisocial, instead of a group or community, which is much harder to portray and empathise with as a viewer.

  7. I never see chinese movies are bad. They have their own specialization CGI. Especially in fantasy movie. There are no other movie in the world that can be compared to china with their awesome fantasy CGI 👍

  8. I'm glad the video uses Crazy Rich Asians as the joke that emphasizes the point. Because China and most of Asia hated this movie. It misrepresents Asia 100%. This is a Hollywood movie about Asians and like all Hollywood depictions of Asia it is grotesque, uninformed, stereotypical and hilariously obvious about the propagandized message it wants to spread. In case you didn't pick up on it only the protagonists get to be Asian American. The crazy rich ones are all purely Asian.

Similarly each of the examples of bad Chinese movies are panned by Chinese audiences worldwide. This isn't because they have only Hollywood and Japanese anime to compare. They have good Chinese movies and tv series as well. The films in question thankfully are described accurately; they are made by rich and inexperienced film makers most often as a cash grab.

But the good Chinese cinema is something I don't think I could really name off. Because the west is unaware of their existence. I'm talking about Three Kingdoms. I'm talking about the Legend of Miyue and Last Sunrise and Everybody is Fine.

Want to know the one thing all my examples have in common? How many of you loved the Star Wars prequels because of all the standing around and talking they did? Show of hands.

China loves those kinds of shows where a minute of dialogue doesn't have to be followed by a 10 minute fight scene or chase scene. The best scenes in Chinese cinema are the ones where people stand around and talk because it then becomes about what's being said and the vast consequences these conversations can have. Imagine if Sherlock Holmes just solved cases without ever directly confronting the criminals himself. Or if Doctor Who came up with all these crazy ideas and then they were just implemented without any of the running around or shootouts against Daleks and Cybermen. Or if the Avengers condensed all the fight scenes into like 5 minutes and the whole movie was the recruiting scenes and then Samuel L. Jackson talking to people on the helicarrier.

The world outside China likes action. (Even this channel mostly talks about movies with tons of actions rather than conversations.) So to market to the west where action takes precedence China is in a real dilemma. They don't really do action well besides the high-flying wire-fu stuff. And guess what? While Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was praised in the west it was yawned at back home. Yes critically successful but Chinese audiences have seen wire-fu too often. It's not fun anymore. But seeing the crazy unrealistic CGI fights in modern day Hollywood reminds us of those really cool unrealistic fights we see in anime. So we try to recreate that because it worked on us too. And then you get stamped with "copycat" by western media while they then produce things like Disney's Mulan and Shangchi.
