Hi Ana, we didn't know about 5 de mayo in the east until around 1997 time frame though in the west maybe it was celebrated before that. It could be that more and more Mexican bars and food establishments discovered that it was a phrase that English speakers could say and repeat. And that was good for marketing as a friendly jingle we could repeat to our friends. Soon, more and more people became aware and "Let's go have a beer! It's 5 de mayo!" was sounded more often as the years progressed. Another good excuse to go have a beer with your friends.

As a Black person, I was told that we celebrate (as in black peoples), because has México not defeated the French those troops would have joined the South and slavery would have been reinstated. I didn’t believe it until I learned history at University lol. It’s true! I now consider it as one of the black holidays like Juneteenth…
