Infinitives are the basic/simple/dictionary version of a verb.
For today’s grammar lesson, we’ll be using them in four different ways.
1. after some verbs
I want to
I need to
I’d like to
2. after adjectives
Nice to meet you!
It’s important to do your homework?
I’m happy to help!
3. after question words
I don’t know what to do.
I don’t know who to ask.
Does he know what to wear?
Does he know when to arrive?
4. to say why / give a reason
I’m watching this video to improve my English.
I went to the store to buy groceries.
I came here to learn about English grammar.

Unit 3: GERUND AND TO INFINITIVE

A. GERUND
1. Cách sử dụng
– Là chủ ngữ của câu: Swimming is a good sport.
– Bổ ngữ của động từ: My hobby is collecting stamps.
– Sau giới từ: I am looking forward to going to Paris.
– Sau một vài động từ: stop, admit, suggest,…
2. Một số cách dùng đặc biệt
✔ Những động từ sau được theo sau bởi Ving: admit, avoid, delay, enjoy, excuse, consider, deny, finish, imagine, forgive, keep, mind, miss, postpone, practise, resist, risk, stop, remember, forget, regret, suggest, like, propose, detest, dread, resent, pardon, try, fancy. Ex:
– They denied copying the information.
– Would you consider lending her money?
– He avoids answering my question.
✔ Verbs + prepositions: apologize for, accuse of, insist on, feel like, congratulate on, suspect of, look forward to, dream of, succeed in, object to, approve/disapprove of…
✔ Gerund cũng theo sau những cụm từ như:
– It’s no use / It’s no good…
– There’s no point (in)…
– It’s (not) worth …
– Have difficult ( in) …
– It’s a waste of time/money …
– Spend/ waste time/money …
– Be/ get used to …
– Be/ get accustomed to …
– Do/ Would you mind… ?
– Be busy doing something
– What about … ? How about …?
– Go + Ving ( go shopping, go swimming…)
B. TO INFINITIVE
1. Verb + to do
Những động từ sau được theo sau trực tiếp bởi toinfinitive: agree, appear, arrange, attempt, ask, decide, determine, be determined, fail, endeavour, forget, happen, hope, learn, manage, offer, plan, prepare, promise, prove, refuse, remember, seem, tend, threaten, try, volunteer, expect, want, mean,…
Ex:
– Please remember to return the book tomorrow.
– I tried to move the table, but it was too heavy.
– I promised to vote for him.
2. Verb + how/ what/ when/ where/ which/ why + to do
Những động từ sử dụng công thức này là: ask, decide, discover, find out, forget, know, learn, remember, see, show, think, understand, want to know, wonder…
Ex:
– She discovered how to read the code.
– I don’t know what to say.
– He couldn’t remember where to come.
– I showed them which way to go.
3. Verb + Object + to do
Những động từ theo công thức này là: advise,allow, enable, encourage, forbid, force, hear, instruct, invite, let, order, permit, persuade,request, remind, see, train, urge, want, tempt…
Ex:
– The teacher permitted us to go out.
– I wouldn’t advise you to buy the car.
– Her father forbade her to go to the party.
– We persuaded him give us his phone
