This guy is selling a book with a specific slant. The experience of a close friend suggests that the recruiting process for intelligence agents may be much more surreptitious and subtle than this author indicates. A friend was a young, relatively naive Journalism major at a well-known and respected midwest liberal arts college during the Nixon presidential era, and my friend was asked to be an intern in the state capitol covering state government activities for the United Press International and Associated Press news agencies. He did this 2 days a week for many weeks and soon impressed his superiors enough that they let him operate independently. My friend was endeavoring to make the best impression possible on his colleagues and Bureau Chief, because he was graduating soon and they were potential employers. One day his Bureau Chief at UPI asked him into his office and, in a very friendly way, indicated how satisfied he was with my friend's work and asked him, in exchange for a handsome stipend, to be involved in a special investigative journalism piece on the activities of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), an activist group heavily involved in organizing and running anti-Vietnam War protests on American college campuses, including the notorious Kent State student demonstration where National Guard troops shot and killed several student demonstrators. My friend, anxious to help, agreed to the assignment and was given a list of specific questions by the Chief which he then asked to his many acquaintances who he knew to be involved in SDS on his college campus. The 12 or so students interviewed were very comfortable with my friend and were very forthcoming in their answers. My friend then followed his Bureau Chief's instructions and immediately after the interviews wrote them up in detail. He was to submit the write-ups directly to the Chief and did so during their next visit. The Chief looked over the binder full of detailed interviews and enthusiastically indicated his approval. He then said he would submit the interview write-ups to his boss at the national UPS headquarters. Shortly thereafter, my friend said it occurred to him that he may have been recruited/hired to essentially spy on SDS as a possible "un-American" activities group. Soon afterward, the Bureau Chief asked him to continue his interviews, but by then my friend had already been accepted into a graduate program in another state, so he begged off. My friend said it all seemed very friendly and on the up-and-up at the time, but in the end, he said he felt very naive about where the info actually may have gone, what it was actually being used for, and whether his Bureau Chief actually may have been a Federal agent.

That’s how they always know exactly who does drugs and they catch them and force them to do the urine test.

Calling everything espionage would be unfair and destructive for all of us. Colleges throughout the World publish most of their work anyway and it is available to anyone who has access to the internet and libraries or goes to conferences and trade shows. Sharing of information globally benefits every one of us. Without sharing of information the World would not make any process and we would not be able to discover things as fast as we do now. Just as an invention in the US can benefit people at the other end of the World, an invention at the other end of the World can benefit American people. So we have to be careful where to put the line and distinguish espionage from information sharing.
