Because plants are a nightmare, that’s why.
Jokes, jokes.
Brown or black spots on house plant leaves just…happen. It’s part of the trials and tribulations that come with having your very own indoor jungle.
If it makes you feel any better, it can happen to the best of us. In fact, wild Monsteras often have brown tips and crispy edges to their leaves. In most cases, the plant can carry on perfectly healthy. So long as you identify why your Monstera got the black spots, it should be able to recover no problem.
As I said (very badly sorry, I’m still ill and a bit breathless), the order I talk about each cause of black leaf spots on Monstera is the order that you’re most likely to encounter them. Therefore, I make the blanket statement that, imo, the most likely culprit of the spots on Monstera is overwatering.
Monstera can take a good deal more overwatering than a lot of plants, but there are things that can harm your plants chance of recovering. If your plant is overwatered and in lower light, that can make for a much longer recovery. Try and find a bright spot it can recuperate in.
Your plant can be overwatered without you even realising it. If you don’t think you’re overwatering but your Monstera is suffering from brown spots on its leaves and probably root rot, take a look at the substrate its in.
Since root rot is more an issue caused by lack of oxygen and bacteria than actually too much water, examine your soil. Is it compacted? Is the pot too big, meaning it takes much longer for the soil to dry out? You can mix additives such as perlite or orchid bark to help aerate the soil.
Another thing is sunburn. Whether or not the sun near you (??) can burn your plants is something you have to learn for yourself. I keep my Alocasia in a westfacing window and they’re fine. No scorch marks ar anything.
My Monstera spends the summer next to my westfacing French doors. Never gets sunburned. HOWEVER if I moved the Monstera 2cm to the other side of the door (i.e. outside) it could potentially burn to a crisp on a hot day if not acclimatised properly.
Whilst lack of humidity might be an issue, Monsteras are pretty happy in the ambient humidity of most places, unless you live somewhere with notably dry air. BUT if you leave your Monstera next to an air vent or radiator or something, you could burn it.
I don’t know if the plural of Monstera is Monstera or Monsteras, but Grammarly is INSISTING it’s Monsteras. We had this issue with Calathea and I just let it in because I don’t like the pink underline. Apologies if it’s incorrect/bothers you.
